The most widespread hairstreak in the United States and southern Canada. Quite variable, it is usually a true gray color, although some individuals, especially worn ones, can be brownish. The hindwing postmedian band is usually white-black-red (going from outside to inside) but some lack the red. On the HW margin, the large orange spot is almost always larger and flatter inwardly than on similar species.
Almost any open habitat.
Throughout warm weather.
Extremely catholic in its tastes, the caterpillars of this species will feed on a very large number of different plant species in many different plant families.
