Description

One of the earliest-flying spring butterflies, males of these feeble-flying blue confections can often be found at mudpuddles, imbibing minerals.

Habitat

Open woods, pine barrens, suburbia, etc.

Flight Period

Throughout warm weather.

Caterpillar Foodplants

A large number of species in many plant families.

Other Notes

The relationships among the many populations that comprise the Spring Azure complex appears to be extremely complex.  It is possible that when enough information is available, that we will treat them as a single species, or, at the other extreme, consider each population as a separate species.  One problem with considering each population as a separate species would be that these populations are not really distinguishable in the field.
