Description

Black. Above, males with a beautiful cloud of greenish-blue spots and dusting on the hindwing median area.  Females with this area bluer. 

Habitat

Deciduous woodland and edges, including non-heavily developed suburbia. 

Flight Period

February through October southward, April through September northward.

Caterpillar Foodplants

Mainly Sassafras and Northern Spicebush, but also other Laurel family plants.

Other Notes

The most common "black" swallowtail of eastern deciduous woodland.
